C. Phillip McIntyre
Formerly known as the James F. Byrnes Tournament of Bands, the Tournament was renamed in honor of C. Phillip “Phil” McIntyre in 2014.
“Mr. Mac” led the James F. Byrnes bands for 30 years (1983-2013). Under Mr. Mac’s leadership, the band program grew in size and received numerous accolades. The Rebel Regiment won ten South Carolina marching band championships, along with numerous other achievements.
Awards and Other Recognition:
- South Carolina House of Representatives Resolution in honor of Mr. McIntyre’s retirement
- Inducted into the South Carolina Music Educators Association Hall of Fame 2011
- Inducted in the Phi Beta Mu Hall of Fame 2007
- Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Year 2001
- Named one of the top twelve South Carolina music educators in the October 2000 Issue of Teaching Music, a National Music Educators Journal.
- Inducted in the South Carolina Band Directors Association Hall of Fame Class of 2000
- James F. Byrnes Teacher of the Year 1998-1999
- 1999 South Carolina Phi Beta Mu Chapter Outstanding Band Master of the Year
- 1999 & 2002 National Band Association’s Citation of Excellence
- Nine-time Most Influential Teacher Award recipient at Byrnes High School 1989, 1991 (2), 1995, 1996, 2001, 2005, 2006 (2).
